The Instructions Menu

The Instructions Menu provides commands to add instructions plus many other commands specific to editing a Ladder Diagram. There are many commands available from this menu so some commands are grouped into a dialog box.

  1.  Add Normally Open Contact.
  2.  Add Normally Closed Contact.
  3.  Add Positive Transition Contact.
  4.  Add Negative Transition Contact.
  5.  Add Alarm Clock.
  6.  Add Coil.
  7.  Add Negative Coil.
  8.  Add Set (latch) Coil.
  9.  Add Reset (Unlatch) Coil.
  10.  More instructions (Timers, Counters,...).
  11.  Pointer.
  12.  Invert an instruction.
  13.  Add Wire.
  14.  Add OR branch.
  15.  Delete OR branch.

Shortcut: none.
Click on Add Normally Open Contact in the Instructions menu.

This function add a normally open contact to the ladder diagram.
Click on the normally open contact button in the toolbar and select an area in the ladder diagram where you want to place the instruction.

This menu entry brings up a dialog box, which allows the user to set various settings.
The input field "name" and "comment" is not required.

Definition of a normally open contact.
The normally open contact instruction checks whether a signal is present. It can be assigned to an input, output, flag, timer or counter.
Enables the rung to the right of the instruction if the rung to the left is enabled and underlining bit is set (TRUE).
The status of this instruction is TRUE whenever a voltage is present (if the instruction is assigned to an input or output).

This function add a normally closed contact to the ladder diagram.
Click on the normally closed contact button in the toolbar and select an area in the ladder diagram where you want to place the instruction.

Definition of a normally closed contact.

Definition of a Positive edge detection.
Enables the right side of the rung for one scan when the rung on left side of the instruction is true.
The status of this instruction becomes TRUE when a rising edge is detected. This remains valid for the duration of only one program cycle.

This function add a Negative Transition Contact to the ladder diagram.
Click on the Add Negative Transition Contact button in the toolbar and select an area in the ladder diagram where you want to place the instruction.

Definition of a Negative edge detection.
Enables the right side of the rung for one scan when the rung on left side of the instruction is false.
The status of this instruction becomes TRUE when a failing edge is detected. This remains valid for the duration of only one program cycle.

Click on Add Alarm Clock in the Instructions menu.

This function add an Alarm Clock function to the ladder diagram.
Click on the Add Alarm Clock function button in the toolbar and select an area in the ladder diagram where you want to place the instruction.

The alarm is easy to set by using the list boxes to set the hour, minutes and seconds you'd like the alarm to go off.
The input field "name" and "comment" is not required.

Sets a bit when the rung is TRUE and resets the bit when the rung is FALSE.
This symbol stands for an internal or external output and can be assigned to a flag or an output. This output will become High when the result of the logical evaluation of the entire row is TRUE.

Definition of a Set Coil instruction.
Sets a bit to TRUE when the rung is TRUE and does nothing when the rung is FALSE.
SET internal or external output. This symbol can be assigned to a flag or an output. This output become High when the result of the logical evaluation of the entire row is TRUE. Even if the logical evaluation of the entire row later becomes FALSE, the output will remain High. Only RESET output can change the output state back Low.

This function add a Reset Coil to the ladder diagram.
Click on the Add Reset Coil button in the toolbar and select an area in the ladder diagram where you want to place the instruction.

Definition of a Reset Coil instruction.
Resets a bit to FALSE when the rung is TRUE and does nothing when the rung is FALSE.
RESET internal or external output. This symbol can be assigned to a flag or an output. This output become LOW when the result of the logical evaluation of the entire row is TRUE.
Even if the logical evaluation of the entire row later becomes FALSE, the output will remain LOW. Only RESET output can change the output state back High.

Clicking the right-hand button of the mouse when the cursor is on a instruction often displays a context-sensitive menu.

Shortcut: none.
Click on Invert in the Instructions menu.

This function invert an instruction in the ladder diagram.
The operation only works for :NORMALLY CLOSED, NORMALLY OPEN, POSITIVE TRANSITION, NEGATIVE TRANSITION, COIL, COIL NOT, SET en RESET.
Click on the Invert button in the toolbar and select an instruction in the ladder diagram where you want to invert the instruction.

The normally closed contact is inverted to a normally closed contact.

Shortcut: none.
Click on Add Wire in the Instructions menu.

This function add a wire in the ladder diagram.
This instruction is the equivalent of a signal line in a schematic diagram. It always shows the level of the previous cell.
Click on the Add Wire button in the toolbar and select an area in the ladder diagram where you want to place the wire.

Shortcut: none.
Click on Add OR branch in the Instructions menu.

This function add a OR branche in the ladder diagram.
Start or end of an OR instruction. This instruction can only be placed in columns 1 trough 8, and it must always have a start and an end.
More OR instructions can be used per row, and the maximum span of an OR instruction is 7 rows.
Click on the Add OR branche button in the toolbar and select an area in the ladder diagram where you want to place the OR branche.

Place an OR in the first column gives an error when you try to build or check the ladder diagram.

It's possible to place an or branch on a wrong area in the ladder diagram.
In that case try to build or check the ladder diagram gives an error.

Definition of a OR operation.
Ladder diagram input instructions perform logical AND and OR operations in an easy to understand format.
If all input instructions in series must all be true for outputs to execute (AND).
If any input instruction in parallel is true, the outputs wil execute (OR).
